Convatec and Olfasense publish study on ostomy pouch odour control

Effectiveness of Malodor-Reducing Ostomy Pouch Additives

One of our odour experts Andrew Meacham is co-author of a scientific study on the effectiveness of malodour-reducing additives in ostomy pouches that has recently been published in Cureus, a peer-reviewed Journal of Medical Science. The paper was prepared in collaboration with co-authors from Convatec Ltd., a leading medical products company.

The research assessed the malodour-reducing performance of six ostomy pouch additives and used a sophisticated testing design to evaluate their performance.

Trained odour panelists assessed the samples based on three key odour parameters: odour intensity (VDI 3882 Part 1), hedonic tone (VDI 3882 Part 2), and odour character (using the Olfasense odour wheel).

This detailed analysis revealed that the terpene blend (TB) and zinc ricinoleate-orange terpene mix (ZnR-Orange) were the most effective in reducing odour intensity and were even associated with slightly pleasant scents.

This comprehensive testing reflects our expertise in odour evaluation for medical applications. We are pleased that these results will assist healthcare providers in educating ostomates on product options, ultimately enhancing patient quality of life.
